Compact Definitions

Term Definition Why It Matters
HDMI-CEC A control feature built into HDMI that lets connected devices send simple commands through the HDMI cable. It can help a streaming box, TV, soundbar, or receiver coordinate power, volume, and input switching when each device supports it.
Wake-on-LAN A network wake signal sent to a sleeping device that is still listening on the network. A TV can only wake this way when standby networking, firmware, and power settings allow it.
SSDP discovery Simple Service Discovery Protocol, a UPnP discovery method for finding devices and services on the local network. Guest Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi, VPNs, and router isolation can block discovery even when the TV is nearby.
iOS Local Network permission The iPhone or iPad privacy permission that allows an app to find and communicate with nearby devices on Wi-Fi. If denied, Remote Control for TV may not find or pair with supported TVs.
Samsung TV app ID A Samsung-specific launch identifier for an installed Samsung Smart TV app. Use Samsung TV app IDs for Samsung custom app launchers; they are not Android package names.
Android TV package name The Android identifier for an installed TV app, usually in a dotted format such as com.example.tvapp. Use Android TV package names for Android TV or Google TV custom app launchers when a built-in app entry is missing.

What Is HDMI-CEC?

HDMI-CEC is an HDMI feature that lets connected devices send basic commands to each other. For TV remote use, it most often affects power, volume, and input switching between a TV, streaming stick, receiver, or soundbar.

Common brand names include Samsung Anynet+, LG Simplink, Sony BRAVIA Sync, Panasonic VIERA Link, and Sharp Aquos Link. If HDMI-CEC is off on one device in the chain, related power or input behavior may stop working.

What Is Wake-on-LAN?

Wake-on-LAN is a network wake signal for devices that keep a network interface active while asleep. TVs vary a lot here: some listen for wake commands in standby, some only do it over Ethernet, and some turn networking off completely when asleep.

If wake does not work, check TV settings for Quick Start, Network Standby, Mobile Device Control, Wake on LAN, power saving, or similar options. Read why some TVs cannot wake over Wi-Fi for the longer explanation.

What Is SSDP Discovery?

SSDP discovery is a local network discovery method used by UPnP devices. It helps apps and devices find compatible services on the same network without manually entering an address.

SSDP depends on local network traffic. Guest networks, hotel Wi-Fi, school networks, router isolation, VPNs, and some firewalls can block it. When that happens, a TV may be powered on and nearby but still missing from discovery.

What Is iOS Local Network Permission?

iOS Local Network permission is the iPhone and iPad privacy control that lets an app find and talk to nearby devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Remote Control for TV needs it for discovery, pairing, and local control.

If permission is denied, open iPhone or iPad Settings, find Remote Control for TV, and enable Local Network. See why iPhone Local Network permission is required for setup details.

What Is a Samsung TV App ID?

A Samsung TV app ID is the Samsung-specific identifier used to launch an installed Samsung Smart TV app. These IDs are often numeric and are only useful on Samsung TV app-launch flows.

Use a Samsung TV app ID when adding a custom Samsung app launcher in Remote Control for TV. Start with the Samsung TV custom app IDs page, then test the launcher on the saved Samsung TV.

What Is an Android TV Package Name?

An Android TV package name is the Android identifier for an installed TV app, usually written in dotted form, such as com.google.android.youtube.tv. Android TV and Google TV custom app launchers commonly use package names as app IDs.

Use Android TV package names for Android TV, Google TV, and Chromecast with Google TV devices. Phone app packages can differ from TV app packages, so use TV-specific package names when possible. Start with the Android TV custom app IDs page.
