Local Network Security

How local Wi-Fi control works for Remote Sunrise apps.

Quick Answer

Remote Sunrise remote control apps use local network access so your iPhone or iPad can discover and control a nearby Mac, Windows PC, TV, or streaming device on the same Wi-Fi network. Local control is designed for devices you own or trust on your own network.

Works With / Does Not Work With

Works With Does Not Work With
Devices on the same local network Devices on different or isolated networks
Approved computers, TVs, and streaming devices Unknown devices you do not approve
Remote Helper on Mac or Windows where needed Mac or Windows computers without the required helper app
TV pairing flows with PIN or approval prompts TVs that block remote access or do not support the app’s control method
Home, office, or hotspot networks you control Guest, hotel, school, or public networks that isolate devices

What Local Network Access Means

When iOS or iPadOS shows a Local Network permission prompt, it means the app wants to discover and communicate with nearby devices on your network. Remote control apps need this permission for normal setup and connection.

Examples:

  • Remote Mouse & Keyboard uses Local Network access to find and control a Mac or Windows PC running Remote Helper.
  • Remote Control for TV uses Local Network access to discover supported TVs and streaming devices.
  • Some TVs also require a PIN, approval prompt, or TV-side remote control setting.

Security Checklist

Check Why It Matters
Use a network you trust Local remote control should be used on home, work, or hotspot networks you control
Do not approve unknown pairing prompts Pairing approval protects computers and TVs from unexpected control
Keep helper apps updated Updates can include compatibility, reliability, and security fixes
Check firewall settings Mac and Windows firewalls can block or allow local helper connections
Avoid guest networks Guest networks often isolate devices and can prevent discovery
Remove old saved devices you no longer use Keeps your app device list clean and easier to audit

Privacy Notes

Remote Sunrise LTD apps do not require user accounts for normal use. Payments are handled by Apple where applicable. Read the privacy policy for current privacy details.

Local Network Security FAQ

Is local network control the same as cloud remote access?

No. Local network control is designed for nearby devices on the same network. It is not the same as exposing your computer or TV to the public internet.

Why does discovery fail on some networks?

Guest, hotel, school, office, and mesh networks can isolate devices or block discovery traffic. Use a trusted home network or personal hotspot when possible.

What should I do if I see an unknown pairing request?

Do not approve it. Check which device is requesting access, confirm your network is private, and restart pairing only when you know which app and device are involved.
